Wheelskirts: the most overlooked safety feature

Publish the 5 June 2025

When it comes to carrying passengers on a cargo bike, safety is a top priority. And yet, one crucial element is often overlooked: Wheelskirts. These discreet yet indispensable accessories play a key role in keeping your passengers safe.

So why are they so important and how can you make sure they’re in place? Let’s dive into it.

Innovative mobility solutions that prioritise safety

A cargo bike is a practical, more sustainable and enjoyable alternative to a car. For families, it’s the perfect way to get around town every day. Cargo bikes aren’t dangerous as long as you follow a few basic safety rules to ensure peace of mind during every journey.

One of the most important of these rules is passenger protection. Passengers, especially children, can be at risk if proper safety measures aren’t followed. That’s where Wheelskirts come in. Fitted around the rear wheel, they’re designed to prevent accidents by stopping hands and feet from coming into contact with the moving wheel.

To ensure a safe and relaxed journey, Wheelskirts are essential. By covering the rear wheel, they allow your passengers to enjoy the ride safely and comfortably.

Included with every longtail Yuba cargo bike

Just bought a Yuba cargo bike? Good news: Wheelskirts are included with any Yuba longtail bike purchase. They’re part of the built-in safety features we designed to protect your passengers from day one.

No setup needed: if your cargo bike is brand new, you’re ready to go. That said, it’s important to check their condition regularly, (ideally once a month), to make sure they still cover the rear wheel completely and securely.

Buying a second-hand Yuba? Check the Wheelskirts

The second-hand market is a great way to get a cargo bike at a great price. But before buying a pre-loved Yuba, make sure all safety elements are in place, especially the Wheelskirts.
If they’re missing or damaged, we strongly recommend asking the seller to provide them, or replacing them before your first ride.

For peace of mind, here’s a quick pre-ride safety checklist

  • Check that the Wheelskirts are installed.
  • Make sure no straps or loose items can get caught in the wheels.
  • Double-check your cargo to ensure it’s secure and well balanced.
  • Make sure the steering elements feel solid and there’s no play.
  • Check that the brakes are properly adjusted and working smoothly.
  • Ensure your passengers always have proper handholds and a place to rest their feet. If they’re too short to reach the sideboards, please install foot pegs to shorten the reach.
  • Make sure your tyre pressure matches the recommended levels. Don’t hesitate to inflate a bit more if you’re carrying passengers on the back.

Wheelskirts are an essential safety feature for any cargo bike carrying passengers. Too often overlooked, they deserve your full attention. A quick glance before every ride is all it takes to make sure they’re in place, for safer, more relaxed adventures on two wheels.
