Child Seats and Mundo versions

One Happy kid on the Mundo

The Yuba Mundo Utility Bike is a practical and comfortable solution for carrying kids. For kids from 1 to 4 years of age (up to 22kg or 48lbs), we recommend strongly the use of a Child Carrier. The model of choice recommended by Yuba is the Peanut Shell, it is:

‱ comfortable
‱ provides great lateral and head protection
‱ easy to install
‱ solid and safe attachment system to the Mundo platform
‱ 2 seats can be attached to the Mundo platform
‱ CPSC and TÜV certified

The Peanut Shell is compatible with the Mundo V3.0 (21 speed or frame sets, blue, tangerine, black bikes) and with Mundo V2.0 (6 speed, 18 speed, green, orange). The width of the Mundo rear rack on those two versions is 18.1cm.

The version Mundo (single speed, 6 speed, upgrade 18speed kit, dark blue and red) are NOT compatible with the Peanut Shell, the rack is 22.5cm wide. If interested in carrying your little one on a V1.0 Mundo, we recommend the Bobike Child seat. The seat with a little tweaking can be installed, however it can’t be easily removed. Be aware that the Bobike doesn’t offer the same level of comfort and protection as the Peanut Shell does.

How to know if your Mundo is compatible with the Peanut Shell?
-> Measure the width of the rack if +/- 18.1 cm, then yes.

The Peanut Shell works, but the fabric in the design is a liability when it rains– it absorbs water and takes time to dry out.

An option for the V3 like the Yepp Maxi would be nice- it is similar, but does not use fabric in the design. http://clevercycles.com/products/accessories/child-seats/rear-mounted-child-seats/#Yepp-maxi

    1. Mark,
Good point! However the seat you are mentioning is NOT compatible with the V3 Mundos. A solution to your problem would be to get a cover for the seat.

  2. Thanks for the post. You describe the Bobike Maxi as a second choice option, but it appeals to me because it leaves more usable space on the sides of the racks, and I understand it is easy to detach/re-attach once it is setup, while I understand that the Peanut Shell is not made to be easily removed.
    +1

    1. The issue is that the Bobike is NOT compatible with Mundo V3.0!

And what about two? Is that totally safe?

What does the “Open Bar” + panniers + 2 Peanut shells look like?

      1. Safety is in important concern here. Carrying 2 kids instead of 1 is not less or more safe in itself. Safety depends on the rider’s skills, and experience.
We have found that the Mundo feels safe as a bike when loaded, it’s like a big SUV on the road.

  5. I agree with you about the fact that is one of the disadvantage of the Peanut Shell. On one hand it attaches very securely to the rack, no flex, on the other hand it takes 5 minutes to install/ uninstall. We have started playing with some QR solutions but nothing safe enough yet to be released(!).

  6. Thanks for the reply. Is it reasonable to remove the Peanut Shell for a cargo-focused trip, or is it length process to unmount/remount it?

    1. mark the BoBike is NOT compatible with the V3. It requires some major customization to attach it to the Mundo V3.0. We hope this helps.
